Professional discipline

Professional life requires continued adherence to codes of conduct both within and beyond the workplace. Doctors, dentists, nurses, teachers, lawyers, social workers, police officers and others must each comply with the standards set by their professional regulatory bodies. Failure to do so may lead to suspension or being struck off a register altogether. Offending behaviour can relate to incompetency or inappropriate or unlawful activities, be this fraud, assault or inappropriate sexual relationships. During investigations and disciplinary hearings, lawyers will advise either an individual professional, perhaps after referral from a trade union, or the regulatory body itself. Certain firms are known for their relationships with bodies such as the Solicitors Regulation Authority, General Medical Council or Teaching Agency.
