International firms report carbon footprints

Almost 60 international law firms have reported their carbon footprints, recording an average reduction of 11% compared to the previous year, according to the Legal Sustainability Alliance (LSA).

The figures were even better for the 28 firms that regularly report their emissions to the LSA, which between them reported a 56% reduction in their combined carbon footprint.

Meanwhile, as The Law Gazette reports, nine firms reported their carbon footprints for the first time, indicating that environmental awareness is increasing in the profession.

Executive members of the LSA include Allen & Overy, Herbert Smith Freehills, Norton Rose Fulbright and Taylor Wessing, but dozens of other firms are also involved – see which ones on the LSA’s website.

Christina Blacklaws, vice president of the Law Society, said: “The Law Society supports and applauds law firms’ initiatives to become increasingly sustainable and to reduce their carbon footprint. This is not only in the interests of the planet — it also makes good business sense, helping to reduce costs and retain clients. It is our hope that through the LSA’s collaborative network, our members continue to promote a cultural shift within their working practices, towards greater environmental sustainability.”
