Thomson Snell & Passmore is a law firm with a reputation for providing high-quality, intelligent advice and exceptional client service. We are legal advisers of choice to generations of families and businesses. We understand that people want clear, practical legal advice that results in the best outcome for their business or personal situation. Our teams and departments work together sharing knowledge and expertise to provide the very best service to our clients.

Our lawyers advise both individuals and businesses over a diverse range of practice areas. We pride ourselves on our industry recognised expertise and this is why 25 of our specialist practice areas are ranked by the leading independent guides to UK law firms.

We are large enough to provide clients with all the resources and expertise that they are likely to need and provide excellent response times, yet small enough to build and maintain tight-knit relationships with our clients. We take pride in our innovative initiatives including a microsite on selling your business, a transport and logistics hotline and a guide for brain injury care.

Four values lie at the heart of who we are and what we do at Thomson Snell & Passmore: building relationships; astute thinking; direct approach and achieving results. These key values drive our culture and provide the foundations of the firm’s business plan.

A sponsorship grant and interest-free loan for the Legal Practice Course is available.

Work experience is a vital opportunity for students to gain practical insights in to a variety of practice areas, working environments and career opportunities. The experience you gain will help inform your future career decisions. We work hard to ensure our work placement programme provides students with a real insight into working in the legal sector, the role and working life of a trainee solicitor. Our lawyers are on hand to share their experiences and answer questions.

The placements consist of spending time with trainee solicitors. Students gain a thorough understanding of the trainee solicitor role and the training contract experience at Thomson Snell & Passmore. Students also benefit from the diverse range of practice areas by spending time in private client and commercial practice teams. The summer placement includes a group project which culminates in a mock employment tribunal or mediation run by our lawyers.

On securing a training contract with the firm we will maintain contact with you by inviting you to special events, sending you updates about the firm and putting you in touch with other new trainee solicitors and our current trainees. On joining we will pair you up with a current trainee solicitor who will be your buddy and responsible for supporting you, answering your questions, to offer advice and generally help you to settle quickly in to the firm and your training contract.

Prior to joining you will be asked to say which areas of law and practice areas you are most interested in and you will have the opportunity to indicate your preferred seat choices to include both commercial and private client seats. We do our very best to allocate your preferences and subject to business needs have a good track record of allocating most if not all of your preferences. We feel strongly that six-month seats work best. Each seat will give you a thorough grounding and exposure to a diverse range of work and clients. Your seat supervisors will work with you to ensure you are developing both the technical and personal skills you will need as a qualified solicitor. During each seat you will have a mid and end seat review with your trainee supervisor when you will discuss your progress, objectives and personal development needs.

A comprehensive induction programme on joining will help you adjust to your new career in business and law. Training and development is provided in a number of ways including formal courses through the Trainee's Professional Skills Course, in-house technical and know-how updates and on-the-job training provided by lawyers in your team. As you develop through your training contract your responsibility will increase with plenty of opportunities to gain client exposure, manage a small caseload and work on a variety of transactions and cases all with the support and supervision from your trainee supervisor and other lawyers in the team.

We are proud of our retention rates and treat our trainee solicitors as our partners of the future. Our dedication to bespoke training and development will enable you to progress your career in the direction you want it to go.
