Firm description and career prospects
As a trainee you will be joining a thriving, modern law firm with a 300-year history and a deep commitment to top quality, partner led-services. Today we are based in London and the South with approximately 110 partners and over 600 employees. With UK offices in London, Basingstoke, Cambridge, Guildford, Oxford and Reading, we offer legal advice to businesses and private clients.
The way we deliver our legal service is as important as the service itself. At Penningtons Manches LLP, service starts from the top: it is truly partner-led. Our partners, solicitors and staff are all committed to reliable, swift communication. And, since value for money is always an important factor, we work hard to ensure that the legal advice our clients receive not only demonstrates an understanding of our clients' business needs but is also cost-effective.
In the business sphere, we advise on the full range of corporate and commercial matters including mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and banking and finance. We also advise on intellectual property, information technology, corporate tax, business recovery and commercial contracts and offer company secretarial services. We advise on the full range of commercial and residential property matters, including agricultural and environmental law and property litigation. We help individuals with advice on tax and estate planning, wills, trusts and probate, family law, capacity issues and the Court of Protection. We also advise on all aspects of dispute resolution, including arbitration, commercial disputes, personal injury and clinical negligence, landlord and tenant, insolvency, debt collection and professional negligence.
As a member of Multilaw, the multi-national association of independent law firms, we have close links with member firms in 50 countries around the world with over 6,000 lawyers. Penningtons Manches LLP is the founder member of the European Law Group, which has members in most European countries. These international connections ensure that if our clients are undertaking a cross border transaction or want advice from a lawyer resident in a particular country, we will be able to advise them.
The firm gives you the opportunity to work in or outside of London. The ability to work outside London, while at the same time being part of a firm with a City presence, appeals to many of the trainees that we recruit. Although the firm has grown consistently, none of the offices are so large that you do not get to know everyone you are working with. Penningtons Manches LLP provides a broad training across practice areas and disciplines, giving trainees a thorough grounding in the law by spending time in the firm's business services, private individuals and real estate divisions. Trainees normally work, within their allocated offices, in four six-month seats.
The firm ensures varied training is given, avoiding too specialised an approach before qualification. Nonetheless, the experience gained in each division gives you a solid foundation, equipping you to embark on your chosen specialisation at the end of your training programme. On occasion, it is possible for a trainee to move to another office for six months if the trainee particularly wants to and can arrange with another trainee to swap offices for that period, or if the business requires it. Normally however, trainees get immersed in the work and culture of their own office, but come together with the trainees from all offices on a quarterly basis and with the whole firm at the firmwide sports and social events. We know our trainees are happiest and most successful when busy with good quality work. We believe in introducing trainees to challenging cases. We recognise the value of giving trainees responsibility and allowing direct contact with clients. However, our experienced solicitors are always ready to give support.
Full LPC fees plus a maintenance grant of £5,000.
Information days are conducted in the Easter holidays in our London office. They are primarily aimed at first-year law students and penultimate-year non-law students interested in a career in law.
Over the course of the day you will be involved in seminars, panel discussions and interactive sessions which will hopefully help confirm if a career in law is for you. You will meet with a wide range of employees from partners to trainees and understand their reasons for joining the firm. Graduate recruitment will also be able to give you some information on how to apply to our vacation schemes and training contracts and hopefully give you some hints and tips on how to stand out from the crowd.
We offer vacation scheme placements in our London, Basingstoke, Cambridge, Guildford, Oxford and Reading offices during July. To be eligible for the vacation scheme you need to be able to start a training contract with us in two years time.
The vacation scheme lasts for one week and will give you a realistic impression of life as a trainee and allow you to spend time in one of the firm's divisions, getting to know the firm, its people and its culture. You will be partnered with a trainee and a senior mentor and will undertake meaningful work within your team. Alongside this you will have to produce a presentation based on a recent case in law and present this back to HR and your mentors.
We strongly encourage applications to our pipeline programmes as many of our trainees are recruited through this route.
Training contract programme
Your time with us begins with a week-long induction. Thereafter, Penningtons Manches' training programme includes quarterly training days using internal and external trainers which cover specific areas of law as well as practical skills and the fostering of commercial awareness. Additionally, the professional skills course is provided and all trainees are encouraged to attend their teams' own technical training and knowledge sharing sessions.
As well as having a seat supervisor in each of the divisions, you will be allocated a buddy and a mentor. Your mentor will be a partner who will be someone you can go to for impartial advice and help during your training contract. Your buddy will be a trainee who is a year ahead of you who will be able to answer the questions that you may not want to ask someone more senior. The trainee appraisal system also ensures that you are given regular feedback and support.
As a trainee at Penningtons Manches LLP, you will certainly have a life outside of work. We don't deny that, at times, you will be asked to work longer hours but nevertheless, our more relaxed work-life culture enables trainees to continue with outside interests.
Life after qualification
We hope that the trainee solicitors we recruit will prove to be the firm's future partners. A training contract with Penningtons Manches LLP will offer you the opportunity to develop into a capable and confident lawyer who is able to help us maintain our standard of excellence.
Sports and social
Each office has a sports and social committee made up of solicitors, trainees and support staff. The committees organise regular outings such as theatre trips, summer barbecues, drinks evenings and ten pin bowling. In addition, at least two-firm wide social events are organised every year, giving partners and staff across all the offices the chance to get together in an informal atmosphere.
A high standard of academic achievement is expected: three or more good A-level passes and preferably a 2.1 or better at degree level, whether you are reading law or another discipline. Clarity of expression, written and oral, and reliability in research are important to us. There should be mental flair (to see solutions in the wood amongst the trees) and flexibility (to move easily between complex and concurrent matters). On the personal side, the firm looks for enthusiasm and resilience (an ability to remain calm even if perhaps the client doesn't); self-confidence without arrogance; openness with discretion; a good team spirit; and, above all, integrity.
