Firm description and career prospects

Berwin Leighton Paisner is an international, full service law firm with over 850 lawyers, including approximately 200 partners, based across 11 global offices. In addition to talented individuals with brilliant minds and bright attitudes, we are looking for people who can take complex, often pressurised, commercial situations in their stride. We run numerous vacation schemes each year and have 40 – 45 training contract vacancies per annum.

The firm has particular strengths in real estate, corporate, finance, tax and litigation and dispute resolution. Based in London, BLP has offices in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Paris, Brussels, Beijing, Singapore, Berlin, Frankfurt, Hong Kong and Moscow (Goltsblat BLP). Trainees benefit from genuine responsibility from the outset of their careers and exposure to high-quality work; BLP's client base includes more than 50 FTSE 350 companies and eight of the world's top 10 banks.

Types of work

BLP delivers first-rate, pragmatic legal advice that helps a wide portfolio of clients - including major corporate organisations, financial institutions, government bodies and public sector organisations, and private clients - achieve their goals. Clients are serviced by lawyers specialising in over 60 areas of legal expertise and a wide variety of key sectors. These include: commercial contracts; corporate finance; defence and aerospace; dispute resolution; energy and natural resources; EU & competition; finance; healthcare and education; hotels, leisure and gaming; human resources; insurance; intellectual property; outsourcing; public sector; real estate; retail; regulatory and compliance; restructuring & insolvency; tax; technology, media and telecoms; and transport and infrastructure.

GDL and LLM+ fees paid and £7,200 maintenance pa.

Work placements

We will be be running a one-week winter vacation scheme in December 2014, a one-week spring scheme in Spring 2015 and a number of summer vacation schemes (each are two weeks long) in June, July and/or August 2015.

All vacation scheme applicants are automatically considered for a training contract.

We will also be running an insight scheme which is a three-day work experience scheme for first-year law students and penultimate-year non-law students. This will run in Spring 2015.

Training contract programme

When recruiting trainees, our focus is on quality rather than quantity. Trainees spend six months in four seats and progress is reviewed every three months. The majority of trainees will gain experience within the real estate, and corporate finance departments and undertake a contentious seat during their training contract. Client secondments are a popular choice, and there is the opportunity to undertake an international seat in either our Brussels, Moscow, Singapore, Hong Kong or Abu Dhabi office if this is of interest.

Our people believe BLP to be a genuinely innovative and friendly firm with a refreshing lack of hierarchy; our open-door policy is something that our trainees value tremendously.

The firm is launching a bespoke LPC course called the LLM+. All trainees study at the University of Law Moorgate branch, where tutors are joined by BLP lawyers and trainers who help to deliver some of the sessions, using BLP precedents and documents, and discussing how theory is applied to real cases and transactions.

We also run the GDL+; a programme of BLP led workshops which supplement the content that you study on the GDL course; helping to bridge the gap between law school and practice. All BLP future trainees study the GDL at the University of Law (any location).

Flexible benefits include permanent health insurance, private medical insurance, subsidised gym membership, 25 days holiday a year.
