Magic circle firms report pay gaps

Freshfields and Slaughter and May have published their pay gap reports for the year, joining fellow magic circle firm Clifford Chance, which released its pay gap information last week.

At Freshfields, the mean pay gap across all staff is 58%. At Slaughter and May, the mean pay gap is 64%. As the Law Gazette reports, both firms included partners in their figures after last year’s widespread criticism of the decision by employers in the legal sector to withhold pay gap information for senior members of the firm, on the grounds that partners are not employees.

Like a growing number of firms, Slaughter and May chose to publish its data on the mean pay gap between BAME and white members of staff. The firm’s ethnicity pay gap is 51%, similar to the 52% gap at Clifford Chance.
