London-based law firm Macfarlanes LLP is the latest firm to announce its trainee retention figures, with 24 out of 28 final-seat trainees set to stay on after qualifying next month. This represents an 86% retention rate for 2025 – a 5% increase from the 81% recorded in 2024.
London-headquartered law firm Macfarlanes LLP is set to open a New York office in April 2026, marking the firm’s first physical presence in the US as it seeks to bring operations closer to the US private capital and private wealth markets.
Macfarlanes LLP and DLA Piper UK LLP have become the latest law firms to increase pay for newly qualified (NQ) solicitors, as competition for junior legal talent across the City and wider UK market shows little sign of slowing.
