Kaplan has been appointed to run the new Solicitors Qualifying Exam, but students, law firms and academics have still received no information on what the assessment will cost.

A leading academic has joined the chorus of criticism directed at the proposed new Solicitors Qualifying Examination, saying that it is “too good to be true”.

I’m beginning to understand the mechanics of the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE). In Autumn 2021 the Solicitors Regulation Authority will introduce a two-part assessment, including a multiple-choice element designed to test legal knowledge (SQE1) and a series of written and oral exams designed to test legal skills (SQE2). Eventually, all new solicitors will have to pass both stages and undertake two years of relevant work experience before they can qualify.

The Solicitors Regulation Authority’s latest report shows a drop in overall pass rate for the first part of the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE), SQE1, from 53% in the November 2021 sitting to 51% in the January 2023 sitting.

The latest results for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) assessments have been released with the overall pass rate of the summer 2023 sittings of SQE2 at 79% – up 2% compared to the April/May 2023 sittings.

In November 2021, 1090 candidates, including 27 solicitor apprentices, took the first-ever Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) – SQE1. The candidates received their results on Friday last week and the Solicitors Regulation Authority has revealed an overall pass rate of 53%. 

Thursday 20 January 2022 is the first results day for part one of the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE). Candidates who sat SQE1 in November 2021 received their results at 3:00pm today via their SQE candidate accounts.
