Trethowans is a UK Top 150 law firm based in the South of England with a team of over 260 including 47 partners and over 90 lawyers. The firm is full service and has a diverse and expanding client base on a regional and national level.

Our continued success is due to the quality of our people and the growing strength and reputation of our brand. Our partners and staff enjoy the benefit of living close to the south coast whilst having the quality of work and clients most often associated with a city firm including household name clients such as Ladbrokes, Endsleigh Insurance Services, Jewson (part of the Saint Gobain Group), Pizza Hut and Rowanmoor. Service excellence is a priority – clients value the firm’s ability to deliver expert advice, in a personable and friendly manner.

Many of our teams and individuals are recommended in both Chambers and Partners and Legal 500.

"Without doubt one important ingredient in our success has been our culture. We pride ourselves on not only being professional and providing an excellent service, but also providing a supportive, inclusive working environment. The fact is when recruiting we look for good, decent people as much as outstanding legal professionals."
Mike Watson, managing partner.

Main areas of work On the commercial side, we represent international and national household brand names, owner-managed businesses, entrepreneurs and major regional employers across the UK. When acting for individuals, we represent land-owners, entrepreneurs, families, high-net-worth individuals, property developers and trustees.

Legal advice to businesses includes: corporate, commercial, banking and finance, commercial property, commercial and property litigation, insurance litigation, employment, licensing, health and safety and regulatory work. Legal advice to individuals includes: personal injury, wills, trusts and tax, wealth structuring and inheritance planning, agriculture and rural property, family, clinical negligence, and residential property.

Trainee solicitors usually undertake four separate seats, each lasting six months. There are no compulsory seats. The firm offers a flexible approach in deciding trainees’ seats to suit individual needs and providing a broad training programme in accordance with the Solicitors Regulation Authority guidelines, whilst also taking into consideration the firm’s business needs.

Trainees work closely with the supervising lawyer/partner to whom they are responsible. They are considered an important part of each team and become closely involved in the team’s work to obtain first-hand legal experience. Each trainee’s performance is reviewed regularly by their supervisor and regular feedback is provided. Trainees are an integral part of the firm from day one. They are responsible for organising social and sporting events, participating in networking and business development activities and in supporting the firm’s nominated charities.
