The University of Westminster Law Society launched its commercial awareness competition on 12 May 2025, with this year’s focus on the important role AI is playing in the legal sector. The contest, which is open to students from all universities across the UK, aims to provide an engaging way for students to enhance their commercial awareness, while exploring a range of legal, economic and ethical considerations.

This year’s question recognises the important role AI is playing in the legal sector: “How should the UK regulate artificial intelligence to drive economic growth while ensuring legal and ethical compliance?”

The competition is open to all UK university students across all years and degree levels. The application form is now open for students to express interest. A maximum of 15 participants (10 students from the University of Westminster and five from other UK institutions) will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis to ensure a high-quality experience. The selected students will then have until 2 June 2025 to make their submissions, which must be under 300 words. All participants will receive a certificate of participation from LawCareers.Net.

The Westminster Law Society stated: “The competition reflects [our] commitment to broadening commercial awareness beyond the classroom and fostering engagement with contemporary issues that will shape the future of legal practice.”

The society also highlighted that taking part would be a valuable addition to CVs and LinkedIn profiles, as well as a great opportunity for professional recognition and future networking.
