Firm description and career prospects
Arnold & Porter is a US-based firm with a deserved reputation for its quality of service and expertise in handling the most complex legal and business problems, which require innovative and practical solutions.
Types of work
Our London lawyers advise on a full range of regulatory, transactional and litigation matters, and focus especially on intellectual property and technology transactions and litigation, pharmaceuticals and medical device regulation and litigation, telecommunications, competition, corporate transactions, financial services and product liability advice and litigation. Providing our clients with an excellent service is our number one priority, and our lawyers need to be commercially minded, approachable and able to work with our clients as part of a team on complex and often high profile legal issues.
Who should apply
We are looking for talented law and non-law graduates from all backgrounds and cultures who share our commitment to excellence, and who want to be part of the continued growth of our London office and become part of our next generation of partners and lawyers. Candidates applying to Arnold & Porter need to demonstrate a consistently high academic background. We expect candidates to have at least a 2.1 degree, AAB at A level or equivalent, and look for well rounded individuals who can demonstrate their participation in a range of extra curricular activities and achievements.
Arnold & Porter will pay your fees for the LPC and the GDL. In addition we will pay a maintenance grant over the duration of each course.
We take up to ten summer vacation students each year. Students will spend two weeks working on a variety of projects and workshops with partners and associates throughout the London office. In addition to this, a number of social events are organised for our summer vacation students to enable them to meet the partners and associates in our London office.
Training contract programme
Trainees will have the opportunity to spend six months working within four of our practice groups: pharmaceuticals, intellectual property, white collar crime, international arbitration, corporate and securities and commercial. Arnold & Porter encourages individuals to work across specialisms, so trainees may find that whilst they are working in one practice group, they undertake work in a variety of different areas, and for a variety of partners and fee-earners throughout the firm. Trainees will be expected to work on several matters at once, and to assume responsibility at an early stage. We emphasise teamwork, and trainees will be exposed to working for a variety of partners and fee earners throughout the office and the firm. Trainees may also have an opportunity to work in our Brussels office and where the occasion permits, to work on projects in one of our US offices. There are also opportunities for client secondments. All trainees are invited to attend the annual new associates retreat in our Washington DC office. Trainees are encouraged to take part in our pro bono programme, and devote 15% of their time to it. The reflects the firm's strong commitment to pro bono and helps young lawyers to develop their client managements skills from an early stage.
