Paralegal (dispute resolution)

The practice

The firm acts for over 200 clients, including all forms of NHS provider and commissioner organisations, NHS England, the Department of Health, the NHS Litigation Authority, regulatory bodies, charities, independent healthcare providers, housing associations, medical malpractice insurers and defence organisations.

The dispute resolution department comprises almost 60 fee earners across four offices and acts for:

  • NHS, voluntary and commercial sector bodies, undertaking litigation concerning commercial, regulatory and public law issues;
  • regulatory bodies, investigating and prosecuting fitness to practise cases, and handling appeals and strategic issues for them;
  • NHS England in performance managing practitioners (including doctors, dentists and opticians); and
  • a varied caseload of commercial, fraud, property, environmental and regulatory litigation for the NHS and other healthcare bodies from the voluntary, public and private sectors.

The role

The dispute resolution team in our Birmingham office is looking to recruit a temporary paralegal to work as part of a team of four fee earners and to assist the lawyers in aspects of their casework. The main roles and responsibilities will include (although, this is not an exhaustive list):

  • working to an annual chargeable hours target;
  • witness liaison;
  • preparing witness statements;
  • instructing experts;
  • putting together trial bundles;
  • attending conferences with counsel/ experts/ clients;
  • attending hearings before statutory committees (not advocacy); and
  • any other duties as reasonably requested including in relation to assisting with business development.

Candidate specification

Candidates must have completed the LPC. In addition, candidates should ideally have:

  • a strong academic record;
  • at least six months experience as a paralegal in a law firm;
  • good drafting skills;
  • good communication skills (both written and oral);
  • excellent administration skills; and
  • good computer skills (Excel, MS Word, Outlook).

Candidates will also be expected to demonstrate at interview that they are:

  • well organised and excellent at timekeeping;
  • proactive; and
  • self-motivated.
