Capsticks is a leading provider of legal services to the health, social care and housing sectors, as well as in the field of professional discipline. The firm has a turnover of c£40m and over 400 staff - including more than 250 fee earners - across 5 offices and acts for a wide range of long standing clients in both the public and private sector including all forms of NHS organisations, governmental and regulatory bodies, medical technology companies, independent healthcare providers, registered providers, insurers, defence organisations, charities and GP practices.
Further details about the firm and the type of work carried out can be found on our website at www.capsticks.com
Our professional discipline team is ranked in the top-tier by the legal directories and is one of the largest in the country. We act for a significant number of regulatory bodies, primarily in the health sector but, increasingly, more widely across a number of professional disciplines. We are now seeking ambitious individuals to join our growing Leeds office and to help us build and develop our practice in the North of England, servicing clients both locally and nationally.
The work largely involves presenting cases but also requires managing an investigatory caseload where it is alleged that the registrant's fitness to practise is impaired through misconduct, competence or health issues and preparing those cases for hearings before panels and committees of the relevant regulators.
Advocacy typically involves interim and substantive hearings. This includes shorter more straightforward hearings as well as more complex cases such as sexual misconduct, dishonesty allegations/ fraud and serious instances of deficient professional performance. Hearings are usually contested and in the majority of cases the registrants are represented, most often by counsel. It is likely that there will also be opportunities to appear in the High Court and the First Tier Tribunal on appeals from decisions of the regulators. Depending on experience, there are likely to be other advocacy opportunities arising from other aspects of the department’s work.
Capsticks is committed to recruiting the best people to maintain its status as legal adviser of choice and, whilst previous experience in the field of regulation and professional discipline is strongly preferred, it is not essential. Candidates will however be expected to be able to demonstrate at interview that they are self-motivated and commercially minded, as well as having good interpersonal skills and being able to work effectively in teams.
This is a great opportunity to join a friendly, dynamic and expanding team in a market leading firm with the opportunity to influence and shape the ways the dispute advocacy service evolves moving forwards.
