Head of chambers

Mr John McGuinness QC

9-12 Bell Yard is one of the leading criminal law sets in London. Chambers has developed a formidable reputation in providing teams of expert counsel for fraud and corruption cases. In addition, Chambers covers the full range of criminal cases as well as related areas of administrative law, local government law and disciplinary tribunals. Like all good modern Chambers, we are a growing business. We currently have 73 tenants including 15 Queen's Counsel. Chambers' work is primarily based in and around London and the Southeast.
9-12 Bell Yard is primarily a criminal set. Members prosecute and defend in cases brought by CPS, HMCE, SFO, DTI and local government, among others.
Applicants should have a commitment to specialising in criminal law. They should combine a strong academic record with outstanding advocacy and communication skills. Chambers is committed to a policy of non-discrimination on grounds of race, religion, disability, gender, sexuality or age.
9-12 Bell Yard offers four 12-month pupillages through OLPAS. Every pupil will be assigned to a different pupil master every four months to ensure they see a wide variety of criminal works and are assessed by as many members of Chambers as possible. In their second six months, pupils can expect to be in court every day. To prepare pupils for the rigours of court work, Chambers runs a programme of fortnightly, in-house advocacy classes as well as Chambers seminars.
OLPAS summer season (30 April) to commence pupillage the following October (no deferred pupillages). Applications are accepted only through OLPAS.
Each year, Chambers offers 16 week-long mini-pupillages; four during the Easter holidays and 12 during the summer. Places are restricted to those studying for a degree or legal professional qualification and are considering coming to the Bar. Please see Chambers' website (above) for further details as to the application procedure. Any queries should be addressed to Henrietta Paget. Closing date for applications is 31 January for that calendar year.
Award of £10,000 to each 12-month pupil. There is also a travel fund for unusual travelling expenses.
