Graduate trainee solicitor

Degree requirements

Achieved:

  1. a 2.2 or above in a law degree and have a pass or be studying for the Legal Practice Course (LPC); or
  2. a 2.2 or above in a non-law degree, have a pass (or above) in the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and have a pass or be studying for the Legal Practice Course (LPC). 

It will be a requirement to have achieved a pass (or above) in the Legal Practice Course (LPC) prior to commencing the trainee solicitor role.

About the role

Under the supervision of a qualified member of the UK legal team, the trainee solicitor will be providing first class and effective support to the UK legal team as they perform their primary role of delivering cost effective, timely and commercial legal support to the business.

The trainee solicitor will work in four different seats during the training contract, supporting the businesses by providing legal advice across different legal disciplines including commercial, regulatory, property, planning, corporate, HR, construction. At all times structured support will be available from senior lawyers to help develop the trainee solicitor into a fully qualified lawyer.

Key tasks and areas of work

  • Providing robust innovative solutions and advice to the business on its day to day legal issues (under supervision) and in accordance with the group legal vision.
  • Working as part of the legal team on large group projects.
  • Supporting solicitors in the team (and, to an extent, external solicitors).
  • Clear and concise communication of legal risks (written or oral) with key stakeholders.
  • With the support of senior lawyers developing and delivering appropriate commercial strategies across the National Grid business.
  • Managing external service providers to deliver efficient, commercial and timely advice as required by the business.
