Legal assistant/office assistant (employment law)

We currently have two opportunities within our employment department for a legal assistant and an office assistant. The successful candidates will provide timely administrative and legal support to appointed fee-earners and solicitors.

Legal assistant

Duties and responsibilities

  • Dealing with telephone enquiries from potential new clients and covering lunchtime telephone rota.
  • Printing off multiple email attachments and photocopying.
  • Produce routine correspondence and any administration associated with the opening and progressing of claims.
  • Accurately obtain statements from clients and witnesses if the appropriate fee-earner is not available.
  • Complete legal research as requested.
  • Attend meetings/tribunals and take notes where necessary.
  • Drafting questionnaires, lists of issues, requests for specific discovery and other important documents.
  • Prepare lists of documents, trial bundles, indexing, paginating and inspecting documents.
  • Instructing counsel.
  • Attending education seminars in and out of office hours.
  • To complete additional ad hoc duties as and when required.

Qualifications and essential skills

  • Qualified to LPC as a minimum (or equivalent experience). Must have proven employment law knowledge.
  • Previous experience of providing basic legal support to fee earners is essential.
  • Adaptability/flexibility when approaching set tasks.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and high standard of client care.
  • Capable of using initiative and demonstrating a clear methodical approach to work.
  • Ability to deal with competing demands and prioritise workload effectively.

Office assistant

Duties and responsibilities

General office administration including:

  • Dealing with telephone calls from potential new clients and taking details
  • Archiving closed files
  • Printing correspondence, finding relevant enclosures and presenting to fee earners for checking and signing
  • Ordering stationery
  • Lunchtime telephone cover (as per rota)
  • Photocopying, faxing, filing
  • Taking late post down to post room and/or post box appropriately stamped
  • File opening
  • File allocation duties
  • Other ad hoc duties from time to time

Qualifications and essential skills

  • Qualified to LLB/GDL as a minimum (or equivalent experience). Must have proven employment law knowledge.
  • Previous experience of providing basic legal support to fee earners is preferred.
  • Adaptability/flexibility when approaching set tasks.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and high standard of client care.
  • Capable of using initiative and demonstrating a clear methodical approach to work.
