Paralegal

The General Dental Council (GDC) is the statutory body responsible for regulating dental professionals in the UK. Protecting patients and ensuring that all dental professionals are fit to practise is at the very core of our regulatory function.

Job purpose

  • To assist with the preparation of case papers for fitness to practise hearings.
  • To work effectively with stakeholders including the complainant, defence and internal lawyers to ensure the expedient progression of cases.
  • To carry out this work within agreed rules, procedures and timescales, contributing to the delivery of continuous improvement across the department.

Areas of responsibility

  • Support and administer a caseload of fitness to practise cases, ensuring that all actions are taken in a timely manner, under the guidance of a prosecutions lawyer.
  • Prepare documents for use at hearings, including witness statements, liaising with other colleagues and organisations as required.
  • Undertake legal research in support of individual cases.
  • Manage the expectations of interested parties relating to casework, ensuring that accurate and appropriate information is available at all times.
  • Deal with correspondence, telephone calls and emails, ensuring appropriate recording of relevant information.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to the role, using both electronic and manual system.
  • Participate in project teams and working groups as necessary to further the work of the department.

Person specification

  • Evidence of legal qualifications or equivalent relevant experience would be desirable though not essential
  • Previous healthcare regulation experience (desirable)
  • Demonstrable experience of having thrived in an environment where a high level of skill in writing, analysis and research was required.
  • Experience of dealing with a variety of stakeholders, including members of the public.
  • Ability to compose documents and reports clearly and concisely using plain English.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to communicate professionally and build empathy with people from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Ability to plan and organise workload, and manage own time effectively.
  • Reliable, proactive, methodical and excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to make well-reasoned decisions that are supported by clear arguments.
  • Ensure compliance with GDC’s policies and statutory obligations with regard to data protection, equalities and diversity, health and safety, and employment.
  • Strong ICT skills, with the ability to use case management systems and Microsoft Office products.

£30,057 to £35,361 pa
