Solicitor - catastrophic injury and large loss team

Our catastrophic injury and large loss team is seeking a two to five years qualified solicitor to run their own caseload and assist on high value, complex cases. The team offers a superb variety of work. Clients include major insurers and corporate clients in connection with catastrophic injury and large loss cases arising from injuries at work, public liabilities and road traffic accidents in addition to claims of sexual assault, harassment and stress/bullying. The team also has substantial expertise in representing police forces in claims of misfeasance, false imprisonment and malicious prosecution.

In addition to civil actions, the team is instructed in relation to two substantial group litigation cases and represents a number of clients in relation to a high-profile public inquiry.

Experience in defendant insurance and large claims is needed but there is no expectation or requirement for any candidate to have experience of defending claims against police clients.

The team offers a supportive environment and a hybrid working week with two days in our new Manchester office and three days working from home.

Key responsibilities

Key responsibilities include:

  • acting and assisting on employers' liability and public liability claims on behalf of leading insurers and insureds working on cases from £50,000 to over £1 million;
  • handling own multi-track caseload and assisting solicitors and partners with complex, high value, personal injury and group litigation claims;
  • drafting pleadings;
  • preparing own liability strategies;
  • reporting to clients;
  • drafting witness statements;
  • preparing instructions to counsel and experts and attending in conference and trials;
  • conducting negotiations and attendance at a variety of ADR formats; and
  • conducting research and keeping up to date with legal and industry practices.

Essential skills and experience

Skills and experience required includes:

  • experience of running a multi-track, EL/PL caseload including experience of determining liability;
  • experience of working within a large loss team;
  • previous experience of defendant personal injury litigation;
  • a high level of accuracy and attention to detail;
  • the ability to meet deadlines and work efficiently and effectively;
  • a professional manner with the ability to build relationships internally and externally;
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills; and
  • a strong academic background.
