County court advocate

LPC Law are seeking BPTC and LPC graduates and solicitors to undertake advocacy work in the county courts of England & Wales. 
 
LPC Law is the UK's largest provider of advocacy services. We are seeking advocates to represent local councils, insurance companies, private individuals and the major banks in a large variety of civil hearings including mortgage possessions, bankruptcy, summary judgment applications and small claims trials.
 
We are particularly seeking candidates based in Lancashire/Cambridgeshire/Devon, Somerset and Bristol/Hampshire, Sussex & Wiltshire. However, we will also accept applications from candidates based throughout England & Wales. 
 
Working as an advocate, you could be in court everyday, managing your own caseload, formulating submissions and putting them before district judges in chambers. You will deal with ushers, solicitors, defendants and witnesses. Typical duties include:
  • Structuring and preparing relevant submissions of law and fact.
  • Liasing with instructing solicitors and LPC Law to ensure cases are managed effectively at court.
  • Keeping up to date with developments in law and procedure.
  • Legal research using both paper and electronic sources.
  • Arranging and conducting pre-trial conferences with clients, lay and expert witnesses.
  • Negotiating with opponents at court. 
  • Where appropriate witness examination, opening and closing speeches.
  • Analysis of the cogent law and procedure and application to the facts.
  • Compiling and submitting attendance notes for all hearings.
  • Invoicing LPC Law for the work undertaken.
You must have the ability to understand the business needs and commercial realities from both the firm's and the client's perspectives. 
 
You will need to demonstrate independence, self-motivation and excellent time management skills. You will need to be able to think on your feet during pressured situations, whilst always putting your client’s case forward in the strongest terms. You must be able to research the law and apply it to practical situations.
 
You need to have excellent public speaking skills, good attention to detail and an ability to write accurately and professionally.  You must be able to get on with people. 
 
You must have achieved (or expect to achieve) a minimum grade of a very competent on the BPTC or a commendation on the LPC.
 
Hearings are paid at a fixed rate per hearing. Travel disbursements are paid.
