Diversity Access Scheme opens for applications from would-be trainee solicitors

The Law Society’s Diversity Access Scheme (DAS) is now accepting applications for its 2018 round of scholarships until Sunday 8 April.

The DAS aims to improve social mobility in the legal profession by supporting people who face exceptional social, educational, financial or personal obstacles to qualify as a solicitor. The scheme is sponsored by RBS, BP, Withers LLP, Eversheds Sutherland, Nottingham Law School, BPP Law School, The University of Law, University of Westminster, and the Law Society Charity.

To date, the scheme has supported over 200 aspiring solicitors to pursue their career ambitions. Law Society president Joe Egan said: "I encourage any aspiring solicitor who is facing particular challenges on their way to qualification to consider applying for a place on the DAS. To thrive, the profession needs committed solicitors from diverse backgrounds.”

In addition to financial assistance to undertake the LPC, the scheme offers awardees high-quality work experience, a mentor and networking opportunities. Former DAS scholar Helen Mead explained what the award means to her: “I wanted to say a huge thank you for believing in me and granting my DAS scholarship. I have secured a training contract with Hanne + Co, a firm with a passion for access to justice that I really believe holds the same values as me.”

Previous alumni have faced extremely circumstances that include time in local authority care, escaping oppressive regimes or studying at university with severe physical disabilities.
