Commercial news round-up: Hinkley Point, Sainsbury’s, Reckitt Benckiser, dairy shortage

As we lurch into July, the pressing matter of training contract applications may be foremost in your minds. It is worth considering that part of making a convincing application – and more importantly, being a convincing candidate at interview – is the development of your commercial awareness. - EDF has revealed that construction of new nuclear plant Hinkley Point is likely to cost an additional £1.5 billion, taking the estimated total to £19.6 billion. The energy company says the plant will create 25,000 jobs, while public auditors say it is “risky and expensive”.
- Sainsbury’s is enjoying its day in the sun, revealing first quarter sales that were up by 2.3%. The company’s share price enjoyed a significant jump as a result.
- The most recent cyberattack, Petya, has hit one of pharma’s biggest player, Reckitt Benckiser, to the extent that it may lose up to £100 million in revenue. The maker of Nurofen and Durex said the attack had affected production and deliveries all over the world.
- Dairy giant Arla Foods has warned that there is likely to be a butter and cream shortage this Christmas – and if it is available, it will be significantly more expensive. No brandy butter? No trifle? It truly is the end of days.
