Parachute Your Way into a Training Contract

updated on 27 May 2008

Dear Oracle

I'm completing the LPC this summer but so far I haven't got a training contract. If I'm unsuccessful again I’d like to work as a paralegal. Where do I look for paralegal jobs?

The Oracle replies

Paralegal jobs are the perfect bridge between your studies and getting a training contract. They offer you the chance to bolster your CV with practical experience and prove your commitment to law - and perhaps the firm you're working for, as trainees are often recruited after doing paralegal work. That said, some firms are wary of paralegal applications from people in your position because they know you're using the job to kill time before a better offer comes along.

The best place to look for paralegal jobs is LawCareers.Net's very own vacancy section. Updated frequently, the Immediate Vacancies page has a spectrum of paralegal opportunities and similar-level positions. To view the vacancies, click here.

Other places to look for jobs include the Law Society Gazette (available at law faculties and postgraduate institutions' careers services) and the rest of the legal press. Legal Week has a particularly good jobs search function. Finally, you should also register with legal recruitment agencies. Your careers service will be able to tell you more about these.
