It is possible to defer the start date for your training contract with quite a large number of firms. Check with individual firms to see what their policies are on this. Remember that they will almost certainly ask you what you are going to do in your year out and will be unimpressed if you don't have a decent response! Vague and woolly ideas are likely to make them question your commitment both to a career as a lawyer and also to the firm. The most common reason for deferral is the wish to travel for a year and most firms will regard this as an acceptable reason. It is important to talk to the firm first before making any travel commitments though in case they say no! Take time before you talk to them to consider your response should the firm turn down your request.
Finally, think about whether it's worth losing your training contract for the sake of a year out. It is unlikely that the smaller firms that take on just a few trainees will agree as they are less able to be flexible. However, many of the larger firms will consider your request if you are serious about it.
