Counting the Cost

updated on 11 November 2003

Dear Oracle

Where can I find out more about the sponsorship that's available for the LPC and BVC? I want to do the necessary postgraduate training but I'm worried about the costs involved.

The Oracle replies

Funding the LPC, BVC or GDL can be a very expensive business. If you haven't been able to obtain a training contract with a firm that is prepared to meet the costs of the courses, or if you've been unable to get a scholarship from the Inns of Court, the prospect of paying the costs yourself can be daunting. Check out the graduate loans available from the high street banks. Some banks offer special deals for lawyers. If you are intending to do the BVC check to see if the set offering you pupillage is prepared to allow you to draw on your pupillage earnings in advance. In addition, check the Directory of Grant Making Trusts to see if any funds are available for law students. Always check with your local education authority to see if there are any sources of funding that you can apply for.
