The Oracle

Small Talk, Big Bonus

updated on 10 March 2009

Dear Oracle

At a LawCareers.Net Basic Training event I was surprised that I had to make the first move when sparking up a conversation with a recruiter. I didn't know what to say! What's your advice?

The Oracle replies

Lawyers are a gregarious bunch who enjoy talking and discussing - and can even be predisposed to rodomontade. You might not be the world's most confident conversationalist but the ability to chat is essential if you want to become a lawyer. How do you expect a recruiter to notice you if you remain silent? Would you just sit quietly through an interview?

Basic Training events are designed as the first point of contact between undergraduates and law firms, so it's understandable that you were a little bewildered. Your next chance will be at law fairs in the autumn or firm open days. You must talk to recruiters at these events - it's imperative and, in fact, easily done.

Firms publicise which events they'll be attending so that you can do a little research beforehand. This is essential at law fairs where recruiters are less than pleased when asked standard questions such as 'what kind of firm are you?' Even the most peripheral glance at the firm's website would have answered this. Tell recruiters a little bit about yourself and ask a related question. For example, if you're a non-law student, ask the recruiter what skills they like to see a non-lawyer demonstrating. Or ask a trainee something about his or her job - inquire about a standard day or what the difference is between studying law and practising it.

It's good to talk!
