LPC Fee Query

updated on 08 March 2005

Dear Oracle

I am starting the LPC in September but am without a training contract. I hope to work in a private client firm when I graduate. If I go ahead and do my LPC and get a training contract afterwards, is that firm likely to refund my LPC fees?

The Oracle replies

If the firm generally pays LPC fees, and you secure a contract with them before you start the LPC, then they may refund any fees that you have already paid, so it's fair for all. However, if you don't get a training contract until after your LPC has ended, there is only a slim chance that the firm will refund the fees as a 'golden hello' - frankly, it's very unlikely indeed! But it's not too late - not all firms hire two years in advance, and you can still be applying for training contracts now. There are a number of firms that are accepting applications now for training contracts starting in 2006 - check out our list of deadlines, and start doing some research.

If funding is an issue, you may want to explore some of the scholarships and bursaries that are available (eg, the Law Society offers a variety). Also, high street banks may offer special rates for loans. The TSG Helpline (08000 856 131) should be able to give you more specific and up-to-date advice on funding.
