The University of Law appoints director of equality, diversity and inclusion

Legal education provider The University of Law (ULaw) has appointed Patrick Johnson as its director of equality, diversity and inclusion as part of efforts to remove existing barriers and create an environment “where everyone, from any background, can succeed”.

Johnson has more than 20 years’ experience in higher education, with the past 13 of those spent at the University of Manchester, leading the institution on all areas of equality, diversity and inclusion. Working with universities and colleges as disabled students’ commissioner, Johnson also aims to remove barriers that obstruct students with disabilities from accessing – and succeeding in – higher education.

His involvement in widening participation initiatives – including roles as deputy chair of Research England’s Research Excellent Framework 2021 Equality and Diversity Advisory Panel and as a member of Wellcome Trust’s diversity and inclusion advisory steering group – highlights Johnson’s experience supporting strategy and engaging with local communities, groups, employers and educational establishments to support candidates on their education, training and employment journey.

Speaking about his new role at ULaw, Johnson said: “I am really excited about joining The University of Law at what feels like a pivotal moment in its growth and development. In relation to diversity and inclusion, I have already seen great work taking place across various campuses and I am looking forward to working with colleagues to develop this further.

“My hope is that as a global university we will lead the way on diversity and inclusion in the higher education sector and beyond.”

Meanwhile, ULaw’s Vice Chancellor and CEO Professor Andrea Nollent added: “We are delighted to welcome someone of Patrick’s calibre on board as our director of equality, diversity and inclusion. We believe passionately in creating an environment and support services, where everyone, from any background, can succeed.

“We look forward to working with Patrick closely on these matters as we continue to lead the way in providing the best opportunities for all students and staff both present and future.”
