Members of the legal profession celebrated International Women’s Day yesterday, highlighting the achievements of women on social media. This year’s theme, #BreakTheBias, is about living in “a world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination.”
In a LinkedIn Post, the Law Society acknowledged that “women represent over half of solicitors in England and Wales” and questioned what else can be done to break the bias, because “almost every woman has a story to tell about a time they’ve experienced bias or stereotyping.”
The Law Society encouraged women to share their personal experiences in the comments section and emphasised the importance of active listening to promote change.
The Law Society wrote: “Bias develops in our early life and is influenced by our experiences. It impacts our thinking, decisions and behaviour in ways that frequently promote inequality and exclusion.”
In the post, the Law Society created a poll to ask its followers “What would be most beneficial in overcoming the bias affecting women in the profession?”.
The poll results revealed that the majority (46%) believe effective hybrid working is the most beneficial tool to break the bias, while 15% said less focus on billable hours, 21% voted fair work allocation and 18% selected mentorship and sponsorship.
LawCareers.Net has summarised some of the challenges that women in law face in this week’s Feature: ‘The fight for gender equality continues’.
