Students coordinate nationwide protest at legal aid cuts

Students across the country are planning protests at the changes to legal aid.

As reported by Lawyer2b, the protests are being coordinated by a group called Students For Legal Aid (Twitter - @Stdnts4LegalAid), which is planning to hold events involving students, academics, barristers and solicitors on at least 12 campuses nationwide, with multiple events also taking place at London universities. Barristers from both Doughty Street Chambers and Garden Court Chambers are reported to be currently involved with the group.

Michael Segalov, one of Students For Legal Aid's organisers who is currently fighting his suspension from the University of Sussex following a protest against the privatisation of part of its campus, said: "Students across the country have been coming together at some of the different demonstrations against legal aid cuts. We realised that there are a huge amount of people on campuses, both students and academics, who are frustrated and angry about the government’s proposals, as they want to work in areas that are publicly funded in a few years’ time."
