A spell check tool has been added to the Pearson assessment platform for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam’s (SQE) written assessments and will be trialled during the July 2026 SQE2 assessment window.
The tool is intended to support candidates in identifying spelling errors and has been introduced in line with recommendations from the SQE Independent Reviewer’s Annual Report. The tool won’t provide any grammatical corrections, writing assistance or content suggestions.
Candidates can familiarise themselves with the feature via the SQE2 Pearson practice platform, which is accessible through the sample questions page.
While the tool is being trialled, existing guidance on spelling and grammar will remain unchanged. This includes the requirements set out in the SQE2 assessment specification, which continue to apply throughout the July 2026 assessment period.
The specification has been updated under the section titled “Clear, precise, concise and acceptable language” to reflect the availability of the spell check function, while reaffirming that the established standards for written communication still apply.
Instructions on how to use the spell check tool are available on the practice platform and within the on-screen guidance provided on the day of the assessment. Further information about the spell check tool will be provided in relation to SQE2 assessment windows after July 2026.
