In the most recent episode of The LawCareers.Net Podcast, the LawCareers.Net team speaks to legal expert Dana Denis-Smith. From growing up in communist Romania with a negative experience of the law to starting her career as a journalist and later moving into law, Dana is now a dedicated advocate for championing women in the legal profession.
Dana is the founder of the First 100 Years, a history project that celebrates the journey of women in the legal profession since 1919. The project highlights significant milestones, such as the passing of the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act, which allowed women to become lawyers for the first time. Dana is also the CEO of Obelisk Support – an organisation that was founded to “pioneer flexible work and promote diversity and inclusion in all types of legal teams”.
During the podcast episode, Dana starts by recounting her initial negative experience with law during her childhood and how her perspective changed: “I was lucky enough that communism collapsed when I was a teenager, so suddenly the world opened up with opportunities.” We then dive into some of these opportunities, including why Dana launched the First 100 Years, the mission behind Obelisk Support, the future of the legal profession for women and the new scholarship campaign – Paving the Way.
