With Mental Health Awareness Week just around the corner, legal mental health charity LawCare is calling upon the legal community to address the high levels of anxiety within the profession.
In 2021, LawCare’s ‘Life in the law’ study found that 69% of its respondents had experienced poor mental health in the previous 12 months, with 60.7% of this group experiencing feelings of anxiety “often”, “very often” or “all of the time”.
LawCare CEO Elizabeth Rimmer attributed these high levels of anxiety to:
“the perfectionist personality of legal professionals;
the high-performance culture in law; and
a lack of effective management support”.
In an effort to open a helpful dialogue around mental health and anxiety within the legal profession, LawCare is hosting a free webinar on Thursday 18 May at 12:30pm titled ‘Let’s talk about anxiety’. The webinar will feature a panel of legal professionals discussing their own personal experiences with anxiety and the strategies they use to manage it.
In addition to this webinar, LawCare has also launched new guidance for managers on how to best support colleagues experiencing anxiety: Guidance for leaders and managers on workplace anxiety.
Speaking on workplace anxiety Rimmer said: “Having anxiety at work can have a huge impact on you and your career, and it’s important that managers recognise and don’t ignore when colleagues may be experiencing anxiety.”
Rimmer added that managers should look out for “a significant drop in performance or reduced productivity”, while always making the effort to respond with “empathy and compassion”.
