Law and business news round-up: Krispy Kreme, EasyJet, steel, O2

As it starts to feel like summer is just round the corner, it is easy to be tempted by the allure of outside drinking and BBQs, and lose focus on the task at hand – namely, honing your commercial awareness so as to be able to present yourself as a credible candidate to the law firms that you hope to join. An easy place to start is reading our weekly digest of business stories:
- As part of the anti-corruption summit being held this week in London, the government has announced plans to introduce a corporate money-laundering offence.
- Disconnected; the European Commission has blocked plans that would have seen Three buy O2. The rationale was based on those age-old anti-competitive reasons, reduced consumer choice and higher prices.
- Who knew that doughnuts could be so lucrative? Krispy Kreme has been sold to JAB Holding, owner of other big brands including Jimmy Choo and Kenco coffee, for a sweet $1.35 billion.
- EasyJet reported a £24 million loss in the six months to the end of March, but pledged to still pay half of its annual profits to shareholders.
- As speculation on what will become of Tata Steel continues, The Economist explains why globally speaking there is a glut of steel.
