Law and business news round-up: Christmas retail results, Trump, Snapchat, Brexit, tidal power

Another week, another spurious claim to a day being “super” – and today is “Retail Super Thursday”, so named because it combines revelations about Christmas sales figures at loads of big-name UK retailers. The Guardian is providing live updates, including from M&S, John Lewis, Tesco and JD Sports. In other titillating business news:
- Trump continues to bully car manufacturers with plans to build cars in Mexico, with Toyota as his latest target.
- In an unusual move from a US tech company, Snapchat has set up its international headquarters in London, affirming its belief in “UK creative industries”.
- Theresa May’s comments about a hard Brexit last weekend caused the pound to plummet to a new low, amid fears that exporters would lose access to European economies. However, Mark Carney has come out to say that fears around post-Brexit economic catastrophe are lessening, although levels of risk remain elevated.
- A £1.6 billion tidal lagoon project in Swansea Bay has received government backing, carrying hopes that it could make a significant contribution to the UK energy supply.
