Brexit has this week been interwoven with the appointment of a new prime minister and a major cabinet reshuffle, including a new chancellor of the exchequer. What will Osborne’s successor, Philip Hammond, do with the economic situation he has been handed? It is almost impossible to keep pace with the financial news making headlines every day, but here is a small selection that you may well be quizzed on in your training contact interviews:
- The Bank of England has surprised analysts by announcing that interest rates are to remain at 0.5%, despite a collapse in business and consumer confidence. However, Mark Carney has warned that a cut will occur unless the economic situation improves over the next month.

- One of those due to do well is Pinewood Studios, which has already enjoyed a 57% profit increase and is expected to benefit from the falling pound.

- Nintendo is celebrating as the runaway success of its augmented reality game Pokémon Go causes the company’s share price to jump by 50%.
