Law and business: commercial news round-up 23.07.2015

Note: it is just over a week until the main training contract application deadline – 31 July – so it is certainly reasonable to be focusing on that right now. But you may also be required to offer an opinion on global goings-on in your (fingers crossed) forthcoming interviews, so it’s worth also taking a look at these:
- Sports Direct has announced that its 2,000 managers and permanent staff are to share in a bonus pot of £155 million; the other 27,000 staff – most of whom are agency workers on zero-hour contracts – will receive nothing.
- Ikea, on the other hand, has committed to paying all its UK staff a “living wage” from April 2016, the first of the big retailers to publicly make the commitment.
- The boss of Japanese tech giant Toshiba has resigned after revelations of some creative accounting for six years that saw the company overstating its profits by nearly £780 million.
- The Economist does its very best job of explaining why the gold price is falling and what it means for the global economy.
- The pound has tumbled following disappointing news from the June retail figures.
- And don’t think we’ve forgotten about Greece! More of the same this week; despite news of the banks reopening, onerous new taxes were introduced and there was agreement by two-thirds of Greek MPs to accept harsh terms in return for an extra £86 billion of loans.
