The Law Society has launched its 2017-18 mentoring scheme, designed to support solicitors from under-represented groups to progress their careers and improve diversity within the profession.
Research conducted by the society has established that especially at more senior levels of the profession, there are significant levels of under-representation of women, members of ethnic minorities, LGBT and disabled solicitors. The research also determined that mentoring can help address this deficit, not only as a source of advice and direction, but also to motivate and inspire lawyers during challenging periods.
Law Society President Robert Bourns said: "Diversity in the legal sector continues to improve, but minority groups are still under-represented at more senior levels. We need a profession that recognises excellence equally; a diverse and dynamic profession that not only reflects the society we serve but the values that we share, supporting the rule of law and the integrity of the justice system. Our mentoring programme will support solicitors from all backgrounds to develop thriving careers.”
The scheme will run for one year and is open to all practising solicitors in England and Wales. Applications for the 2017-18 programme are open and will close on 26 May 2017.
