Law Society chief executive announces retirement

updated on 19 March 2014

Des Hudson, chief executive of the Law Society, has confirmed that he will retire from his position in July.

As reported by Legal Futures, there had been growing pressure on Hudson to resign following criticism of the Law Society's response to criminal legal aid reforms. In December, members at a special general meeting passed a motion of no-confidence in him and president Nick Fluck. Another matter of controversy has been Hudson's pay; the chief executive received salary and benefits of £340,000 with no pension contributions, according to the Law Society’s 2012-13 annual report.

Fluck commended Hudson on his leadership at the society: "Des has delivered an outstanding service to the Law Society and has been a powerful advocate for the solicitors’ profession for eight years. He will be a tough act to follow. He has transformed the organisation during his tenure and provided a powerful and influential voice for our members."
