Law Soc celebrates National Pro Bono Week

updated on 09 November 2012

The Law Society, Bar Council and Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) have all marked this year's National Pro Bono Week with a series of events.

The week kicked off on Monday 5 November with an official launch party hosted by the Law Society, followed by an interactive debate about how pro bono can help self-represented litigants. On Tuesday Law Officers hosted a reception for MPs to discuss issues surrounding pro bono. On Saturday 10 November, the LawWorks Student Conference will be held in Manchester, while a new law clinic will be launched in Cumbria. This week has also seen the release of two new pro bono publications; the latest Guide to Pro Bono (which guides MPs and advice agencies on how to access pro bono for their constituents and clients) and the second Pro Bono Yearbook of England and Wales.

Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, president of the Law Society, said: "Pro bono is good for solicitors and enables them to show that they are genuinely committed to access to justice. It can build skills, experience, confidence and self-esteem. It brings lawyers into contact with many clients that they wouldn't otherwise meet and enables them to use their unique professional skills to make a high-value contribution to helping others."
