The Bar Council has this week hosted the second Bar Placement Week in Leeds and Manchester, following the scheme’s success in 2014.
The week is run in partnership with Pathways to Law; 30 high-achieving year 12 students from non-traditional backgrounds were given training on essential skills for interviews and took part in an advocacy workshop. They also had a three-and-a-half day placement with barristers from local chambers. Last year, the Bar Placement Week was recognised at the Halsbury Legal Awards in London, winning the award for diversity and inclusion.
Chairman of the Bar Council, Alistair MacDonald QC, said: "Taking part in the Bar Placement Week not only gives high-achieving young people from non-traditional backgrounds an opportunity to experience life at the Bar first hand, it also helps us to demonstrate that a career at the Bar is open to everyone of ability, irrespective of background."
