Future Legal Mind 2017: essay competition won by University of Law student

updated on 12 April 2017

A Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) student at the University of Law has won the prestigious Future Legal Mind essay competition for 2017.

Hana Kapadia’s winning submission examined the UK civil justice system and the need for qualified lawyers to ensure justice, rather than the current situation where many people who cannot afford legal representation are forced to represent themselves, despite having no legal training. She now takes away the first prize of £5,000 and a work experience placement with law firm Simpson Millar.

Simon Trott, managing director of the National Accident Helpline and chair of the judges for this year’s competition, commented: "Hana's perception of the development of society and how this affects the legal profession was profound. We wholeheartedly congratulate Hana on her hard work, and look forward to seeing her develop her legal career, supported by Future Legal Mind."

Reflecting on her win, Hana said:  "I still can’t believe it, to be honest. I was elated to hear that I won... Winning the competition will undoubtedly provide a huge boost to my CV, and is going to be a huge aid financially, to give me a sense of security towards funding my studies. I would definitely recommend all law students to enter Future Legal Mind 2018."
