Brett Dixon has been inaugurated as the 182nd president of the Law Society of England and Wales, taking office alongside Vice President Dana Denis-Smith OBE and Deputy Vice President Jeff Lewis. Each official will hold office for one year and represent the organisation across both domestic and international matters.
Reflecting on his appointment, Dixon said: "I am honoured to serve as Law Society president at a pivotal point for the profession. As artificial intelligence transforms legal practice and digital justice, I will advocate for clear standards, appropriate regulation and responsible innovation."
He also pledged to champion a criminal justice system “fit for the future”, calling for long-term investment, earlier intervention and responsible innovation to tackle ongoing challenges and help deliver safer communities.
His inaugural speech highlighted that a key priority during his term is modernising the UK's civil justice system. The Law Society's press release emphasised that Dixon will continue to push for stronger access to justice and address structural issues including court delays, judicial capacity, possession processes and wider court modernisation. He'll also support the ethical and effective use of technology across the justice system while promoting greater clarity around how regulatory standards apply when AI's used in legal practice.
Improving access to the profession will form another central part of his agenda. Dixon plans to support people from disadvantaged and lower socioeconomic backgrounds entering the profession and will hold roundtables across England and Wales to ensure disabled solicitors’ experiences inform the Law Society’s future resources and support.
Admitted as a solicitor in 1999, Dixon has extensive experience in civil litigation and is an accredited mediator. He began his career in general practice in Manchester and has worked for firms across the North West. He currently serves as an honorary professor of law at the University of Leicester, a mediator with Trust Mediation and the legal expert member of the Online Procedure Rule Committee.
Dixon joined the Law Society Council in 2019 as the representative for personal injury lawyers and previously served as president of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers.
