The Law Society has called on the country's solicitors to promote diversity and equality in the legal profession by marching at the World Pride Parade, which takes place in London on Saturday 7 July 2012.
The Bar Council, Law Society, Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx), Interlaw Diversity Forum, Bar Lesbian and Gay Group (BLAGG) and the Junior Lawyers Division all share a tradition of marching together at the parade, and will this year promote a message of "lawyers for equal marriage" and carry a banner saying "equality under the law". The official meeting point for marchers is Chiltern Street (opposite Baker Street Tube Station) at 10.30am on Saturday 7 July, while pre-Pride drinks will take place from 6pm the evening before at the Law Society Six Clerks Bar on Chancery Lane.
Law Society President-elect Lucy Scott-Moncrieff, who will lead the legal delegation at the parade, said: "Equality for all under the law is a principle which the legal sector as a whole supports and works to promote. Lawyers, through the work they do on behalf of their clients, are advocates of equal rights for all, whether that be in supporting equality in marriage for same sex couples, representing those who face unfair discrimination or promoting equal access to justice. Law is a diverse profession in all respects. Our members, whether gay, straight, bisexual or transgender, come from all walks of life and different socio-economic backgrounds. From sole practitioners to City-based solicitors, they practise in a range of firms and specialise in varied fields of law. The World Pride Parade gives us an opportunity to celebrate sexual orientation and gender diversity in the legal profession and beyond."
