It's okay to feel lost when your degree ends

It's okay to feel lost when your degree ends

Student Verdict

Reading time: one minute

I always thought that finishing my degree would mean a brilliant sigh of relief. However, sitting here having handed everything in and tried as hard as I possibly could in each topic, I feel completely confused.

It's not like I've graduated yet and it's not like I've done something nobody has ever done before, but, to me, it’s a massive deal! So, why doesn’t it feel like it is?

I think that all the pent-up stress you build in exam season may leave someone feeling lost after completing everything for university. The people around you are unsure whether to celebrate with you or wait until you’ve graduated, which is completely understandable.

You’ve also gone from feeling the weight of your future career, legal knowledge, work experience, part-time work and job interviews on your shoulders, to sitting at home with absolutely nothing to do but watch TV and reflect. Which, may I add, is well-deserved rest after completing a degree!

Nobody ever talks about the fact that university can end for someone on a random Sunday night sitting at home or on a Wednesday morning sitting in a coffee shop. That initial moment of realisation is potentially the weirdest and scariest feeling anyone doing a degree can feel. However, the overwhelming feeling of pride soon sets in and changes this feeling. Next minute you’re posting a photo with your dissertation preaching how Elle Woods will forever be your inspiration.

So, if you do feel lost after your degree ends just know that you’re not alone. Soon your future career will begin, so look forward to it!
