Each year over 1,500 students study full-time and part-time on a range of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes.

Postgraduate study

Manchester Law School has extensive links to the Northwest's legal profession and has developed an excellent reputation as a forward-thinking provider of high quality postgraduate legal training. Programmes range from law conversion (GDL) and specialist professional training to engaging research. These include the Legal Practice Course (LPC) for trainee solicitors, the Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC) as well as LLM programmes; courses are offered on a full-time and part-time basis. With a focus on simulating realistic legal practice scenarios, our courses have been carefully designed to help students think and behave like a legal professional from the outset. Programmes have been created in consultation with local legal practices and professional bodies to reflect the most up to date requirements in the industry.

Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)

Designed for non-law graduates, the GDL equips you with the legal know how you need to train as a lawyer - the course will help you think and act like a legal professional. You will study the core legal areas you need to complete the first stage of legal training, leaving you fully prepared to train as a solicitor or barrister. We place emphasis on face-to-face teaching, so primarily you will learn through lectures and tutorials. It is your first step towards a successful legal career.

Bar Professional Training Course (BPTC)

The BPTC equips you with the skills you need to become a barrister. It is an interactive course with an emphasis on essential practical skills like advocacy and drafting. You are placed into small 'chambers' groups and allocated a base room containing IT/AV equipment and essential resources, as well as access to our fully equipped mock courtroom. You will have dedicated careers support throughout the course and help in bridging the gap between student and professional life. BPTC students also benefit from the inclusion of an additional independent mediation qualification at no additional charge. Many of our teaching staff continue to practise, and we have strong links to local barristers who contribute to our student mentor scheme, professional conduct teaching and advocacy training.

Legal Practice Course (LPC)

Our LPC is a great start to your career as a solicitor; it gives you the essential skills you need to become a lawyer. Interactive workshops, dedicated tutors and exceptional extra-curricular activities provide the opportunity to enhance your career prospects.  You will study in our dedicated LPC base area that houses the resources you need for the course. We offer a range of study electives and for many of these we provide work placement opportunities, an incredible advantage for your career development. You can tailor the course around your career aspirations and our strong links with local firms, practitioner mentor scheme and work experience opportunities provide excellent links with the local legal profession.

Master of Laws (LLM)

The programme consists of two routes; a traditional taught LLM and a 'top-up' LLM for those who already have an LPC or BVC/BPTC. Both courses give you a chance to undertake research in a legal area that interests you or benefits your career. On the taught LLM, you can focus on one of our specialist areas (equality law, European law, human rights law or law and society) or specialise in an area of your choice. Alternatively, the top-up LLM gives qualified lawyers the chance to easily 'top-up' to masters level. By using credits from your existing LPC/BVC and completing a dissertation and one study module, you can quickly gain a valuable CV boost.

Undergraduate study

LLB (Hons) - At MMU the LLB is not just a law degree, you will gain the legal knowledge and skills you expect from a law degree but also a whole lot more. From day one, you will be encouraged to succeed academically but also supported to develop and prepare for a successful legal career. You could go on to utilise the transferable legal skills you have gained to set yourself aside from other applicants in careers such as business consultancy or finance.

Passionate and experienced tutors, many of whom are still in legal practice and experts in their field, will teach you. With a wide range of legal subjects available to study, plus valuable extra-curricular activities and support, you can shape your experience to match your aspirations.

We offer scholarships for the GDL, LPC and BPTC, please see for further information.
