More info

The Bristol Institute of Legal Practice (BILP) at UWE Bristol is one of the leading providers of professional legal education in the UK with an established track record of excellence, which has been confirmed by its regulators year on year.

We are unique in offering the full range of professional courses alongside bespoke training to local firms. We offer flexible modes of study, a choice of timetabling options and are large enough to provide a range and depth of quality provision.

Our courses are fresh and innovative, designed and taught by experienced solicitors/barristers teaching within their own subject areas. The emphasis is on practical learning within a supportive friendly environment to ensure that students are 'practice-ready'.

Teaching is in small interactive groups with intensive, personal tuition supported by extensive web based materials to compliment learning (but never to substitute it).The facilities are superb: digital courtrooms, spacious and modern training/ common rooms and access to the largest library in the South West.

We have a very good track record of placing students that have not secured training contracts/pupillage. There are strong links to local and regional practice, including work placement schemes with the Bristol Law Society on the LPC. All our students are encouraged to participate in our large, nationally acclaimed and award-winning Pro Bono Unit. LPC and BPTC students may also undertake ADR training to become accredited ADR mediators.

GDL (full and part time)

Our GDL enables non-law graduates to progress with confidence to the LPC/BPTC and is supported by a dedicated team of tutors who understand the demands of the GDL route. Teaching is not shared with undergraduates. The curriculum is divided into two teaching blocks with assessments after each block, which greatly assists students in managing workload.
Places offered: 110 (full time) 40 (part time)

LPC (full and part time)

We are one of only a very few providers nationally to have consistently achieved the highest possible grading of 'excellent' from its regulator. At the last assessment visit, we received the top grade of 'commendable practice' in all six areas of the course. Students are offered a broad based Stage 1 designed to prepare them for the full variety of practice followed by one of the widest selections of elective subjects of any provider ( 15 elective subjects are on offer).
Places offered: 320 (full time) 80 (part time)

BPTC (full and part time)

Our BPTC equips students with key skills to excel at the Bar and beyond providing outstanding opportunities in advocacy, research, conference and mediations skills and to assist its students in securing pupillage. Its imaginative teaching methods have been commended by the BSB and there are exceptional links with the local Bar.
Places offered: 120 (full time) 36 (part time by open learning)
