Mr Collingwood Thompson QC

7BR is a friendly, long-established common law set with an outstanding reputation for advocacy and for the high quality of work we attract across a range of complementary practice areas. Our members come from a wide variety of personal, educational and professional backgrounds. We are proud of our strong heritage, with many distinguished alumni, but we are modern and innovative in our approach. We own the buildings from which we practise and in 2020 completed extensive renovations. Chambers provides an optimal working environment with the latest technology.

Chambers’ core work encompasses clinical negligence; personal injury; product liability; complex fraud and serious crime; employment and discrimination; child and family; and public law and inquiries. We are leaders in these practice areas: many of our senior members and Silks appear in the most prominent trials and appeals in our fields every year and they and Chambers are regularly ranked in the directories. Whilst our members usually specialise as they become more senior, junior tenants are expected to undertake a mixed practice which includes civil, family and crime, giving them broad-based advocacy experience at the start of their career.

We are looking for highly motivated, hard-working applicants who have the potential to be exceptional advocates. You will need to demonstrate that you have the necessary intellectual and analytical skills to be able to understand and advise on complex legal issues across a variety of practice areas. A significant proportion of Chambers’ work, particularly criminal work, is outside London. You will be expected to regularly travel to court centres some distance from London and manage a demanding schedule. We are passionate about fair recruitment and improving diversity and social mobility at the Bar. We welcome applications from groups under-represented in the legal sector. Current members have come to us by a variety of different routes, many being the first in their family to attend university.

Pupils will have three supervisors, each for a four-month period. We ensure that all pupils receive a broad-based training in civil, criminal and family law, with a unique arrangement that allows pupils to choose a practice area for their last four months and tailor pupillage to their interests. We run a programme of training which includes oral and written advocacy exercises. Pupils are fully integrated in chambers life. Our retention rate is excellent and in the past eight years we have offered tenancy to 14 out of 17 pupils. Our tenancy decisions are based solely on merit as there is always sufficient work for new recruits to Chambers.

As per the Pupillage Gateway.

Apply online via our website. We will fund mini-pupils’ travel outside London. A virtual mini-pupillage providing a snapshot of life at 7BR and what pupillage with us looks like can be found on our website: A number of our junior tenants have written accounts of life during and after pupillage, which are also available on our website.

We are currently offering six 12-month pupillages: three commencing in October 2022 and three in October 2023. Each pupil will receive an award of £60,000, which includes guaranteed earnings of £10,000. Pupils can draw down £10,000 of the award in the year prior to commencing pupillage.
