Professional discipline

Professional life requires continued adherence to codes of conduct both within and beyond the workplace. Professionals such as doctors, dentists, nurses, teachers, lawyers, social workers and police officers must comply with the standards set by their professional regulatory bodies. Failure to do so may lead to suspension, or being struck off a register altogether. Offending behaviour can relate to incompetency or inappropriate or unlawful activities, be this fraud, assault or inappropriate sexual relationships. During investigations and disciplinary hearings, lawyers will advise either an individual professional, perhaps after referral from a trade union, or the regulatory body itself. Certain firms are known for their relationships with bodies like the Solicitors Regulation Authority, the General Medical Council or the Teaching Regulation Agency.
