Firm description and career prospects

Dechert LLP is a fast-growing international law firm with over 1,000 lawyers across 19 offices in the United States, Europe and Asia. London is our third largest office, after Philadelphia and New York.

Types of work Our largest practice areas in London are corporate and securities, hedge funds and other investment funds, and finance and real estate. We also have smaller teams practising in areas such as litigation, intellectual property, employment and tax.

Who should apply Dechert looks for enthusiasm, intelligence, an ability to find practical solutions, and for powers of expression and persuasion. Graduates from any discipline are welcome to apply.

Sponsorship

Payment of LPC course fees and £10,000 maintenance p.a. in two equal instalments, the first in September following commencement of the course and the second in the following January.

Work placements

We run work placement programmes at Easter, and in the summer. The programmes give you a chance to experience the sort of work a trainee will do, and to take part in a variety of seminars, exercises and social events. Our programmes are aimed at penultimate year law students. The closing date for applications is 31 January 2010.

Training programme

Trainees do six seats of four months. We believe the six seat system gives the best possible opportunity to experience a wide range of practice areas, and to learn quickly. Every new seat is discussed with trainees, and will reflect their interests and ambitions. As such, no two trainees have the same training contract.

The highly personalised six seat rotation system allows ample opportunity for secondments to Brussels, Munich, Hong Kong and the US as well as to clients.

Choice of seats, and professional development is guided by both our director of training and a personal trainee partner, who meet with our trainees regularly. The firm has a lively training programme covering a wide range of law and skills topics, with many sessions aimed specifically at trainees.

Trainees are encouraged to take part in our Pro Bono programme. Not only does this reflect our commitment to Pro Bono, but we believe it helps our young lawyers to develop their skills, particularly in case analysis and in interviewing and counselling clients.
