Justice First Fellowship Scheme (training contracts in social welfare law)

The Legal Education Foundation (TLEF) has established a new Scheme to boost careers in social welfare law: The Justice First Fellowship.

The first round of recruitment is focussing on law graduates that have passed their LPC by 30 September 2014 and are seeking to complete their training contract and commence their career in a social welfare organisation. In future rounds, we plan to open the fellowship to barristers and paralegals.

In the first round, there will be seven full-salaried, two-year fellowships available with host organisations based in England and Scotland starting from January 2015. All organisations are registered with the Solicitors Regulatory Authority to supervise trainees. They are all highly effective organisations, thinking creatively about service delivery and sustainability

Applications will be accepted online via TLEF website www.thelegaleducationfoundation.org from 8 - 30 September 2014 with fellows expected to be in post in January 2015.

The host organisations are:
  1. Coram Children’s Legal Centre (London)
  2. Coventry Law Centre
  3. Deighton Pierce Glynn (London)
  4. Govan Law Centre (Glasgow)
  5. Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit
  6. North Staffordshire and Stoke Citizens Advice Bureau
  7. Public Law Project (London)
The fellowship itself has three parts:
  1. Fellows are fully funded to carry out their training contract in social welfare law;
  2. Fellows will have with time and resource alongside their traineeships to develop and implement a project that will advance access to justice in some way;
  3. During the course of the Fellowship, Fellows will receive additional support, training and opportunities to gain skills and feel part of a wider movement of people committed to access to justice.
Fellows will commit to completing the two year training contract term and we expect competition for places to be intense. We will recruit those students that can show the greatest passion for access to justice and the highest skills and aptitude.

Fellows will be directly employed by the host organisation which will be responsible for supervising and supporting the Fellow. The wider support, training and opportunities will be organised by TLEF and its partners.
